This is an outstanding facility that uses a great fleet of matched Sonars, the boat of choice for the regatta. The 2015 Richardson NoR is attached. Please review and start to get your teams ready. We are starting the process early with anticipation of filling all slots this year. So get to the planning of your schedules now so you do not miss out on the Richardson challenge.

As of today, September 1, YRUGL has signed on 6 teams to race in this year's Richardson Trophy Regatta being held in Sheboygan. Late entries are now and will be considered in that a total of ten teams can compete in this year's Regatta. The actual dates of the event are October 3-4 shortened by one day over the original 3 day event. Sonars are the boat of choice and will be sailed out of the Sheboygan Yacht Club which is also the site of Sail Sheboygan a US Sailing Center. We are all looking forward to a great event hosting by a great group of people. Check back later for more updates.

Richardson 2015 Sheboygan Yacht Club

After the disappointment of not having a regatta in Rochester last year, all eyes were on Sheboygan Yacht Club and their hosting of this year’s Richardson Regatta. The field was set with eight teams ready to do battle. This was whittled down to six due to last minute permitted withdrawals. But these remaining six teams were excited to get things going on the two event only to awake with Saturday morning to a once again persistent five day blow. Winds had been clocked at 30-35 knots with higher gusts the preceding days that built the seas to four to six feet that were cashing the breakwalls. With little hope of getting in any races on Saturday, the officials called off all change of racing. However with Sunday morning dawning with a final relief of wind and waves, the regatta was on. The goal was to race a double round robin and proceed directly to the finals. More to follow.

The winner's recap by Peter Holz

The 2015 Richardson Trophy started out a cold and windy regatta, with no racing on Saturday, we were frustrated and anxious to get out on the water. When we finally got out to race on Sunday, we raced David Nieman and started the regatta with a loss. Although it was a difficult way to start a regatta with a shortened format, we knew that it was still early. We went on to win ever other race of the round robin, that is until we raced our long time friend and competitor Steve Lowery, who defeated us in the final race of the round robin.

We ended up right back up against Lowery in the Finals, which was a first to two point series. We won the first race after a great start and great tactics by my crew of Meg Six and Michael Whitford. The second race was much more dramatic, with lots of shouting and penalties in the pre-start. We were dead even off the line against Lowery as he carried a penalty. We were neck and neck as we approached the windward mark, where Lowery and his team from Chicago tried to offset their penalty. After much patience, we waited for our window and sailed through his mark trap and ended up with a four boat length lead, which we extended until the finish line. That was the exciting race which allowed us to clinch the Richardson Trophy for the first time. We sailed this regatta a few years ago in Chicago and finished 7th. It was an unbelievable feeling to lift such a beautiful and historic trophy with good friends and family there to support us. The win would not have been possible without the great work of my crew Meg Six and Michael Whitford, who were unbelievable throughout the racing.

It was a great weekend and a great team to finally win the Richardson Trophy with and we can’t wait to defend our title next year!
